Map categories across eight Chinese marketplaces without losing source context

Keep source categories separate from your catalogue taxonomy and review ambiguous mappings before publishing.

A shared catalogue category can help a team browse records from several sources, but it should preserve the route back to each source. Classification also needs to stay separate from product and variant relationships.

This method applies to agreed data from 1688, Alibaba, Taobao, JD, Pinduoduo, Weidian, Goofish and Yiwugo. In a LinkedIn article, Ben Adams distinguishes taxonomy from a product model. The review method below is original editorial guidance for marketplace data review.

Keep source and target categories in separate fields

Retain the source platform and the category label or path actually available from the selected page. Keep the proposed internal category separately, with a mapping version and review status. If the source category is absent, preserve that absence rather than inventing a path.

PandaBuyNow’s public fictional pack does not provide a complete category tree for any platform. Category availability and depth must therefore be confirmed with representative links. The fact that a source supports product collection does not establish a complete taxonomy export.

Test ambiguous products before mapping a whole group

Consider an original fictional case: your catalogue separates reusable shopping bags from promotional packaging. A source title saying “canvas bag” may not resolve the intended category. Keep the proposed mapping as needs review until supporting fields or clarification settle it.

Check a clear match, an ambiguous case and an unmatched case for each source included in the project. A proposed common label does not prove that eight source categories have identical meanings. Keep unmatched records visible, and have a reviewer approve the rule rather than silently choosing the nearest name.

Preserve product relationships and mapping decisions

A colour or size option belongs in the product/variant structure even when several options share one category. A Goofish condition statement and a Pinduoduo offer condition also remain separate from the category assignment. Avoid using extra category levels to hide these different concepts.

Record who approved the mapping and why, then check how a changed rule affects existing records. Share the target category list and representative links with PandaBuyNow to discuss feasible source fields and a project sample. This guide does not promise automatic classification, universal category coverage or a ready-to-publish marketplace feed.
